2 Setting Up the Game

2.1 Entering and Selecting Account Data

If you are new to Tibia, you must create an account before you can start playing. A Tibia account is like a personal register that will help you organise your activities in Tibia. Relevant information such as payments, punishments for rule violations, or your list of characters will be recorded in your account. You can check the status of your account anytime by having a look at your account page.
Since accounts represent players in the game, each account must be assigned to an individual email address. It is possible for players to have more than one account, but each account must have an individual email address.

You can create your account either via the Tibia website or directly in the Tibia client. Even if there are small differences, the account creation on the website and in the client follows the same steps (differences are marked):
  1. Entering Your Email Address
First you need to enter a valid email address to which you want your new account to be assigned. You can only register one account to one email address at a time, so make sure the address is not assigned to an account already.
Note: The email address is the key to your account. Your must enter it whenever you wish to play Tibia. Moreover, if you should ever lose your password, you can always get it back as long as you have access to the assigned email address. If you have lost access to the email address, and if your account is not registered, you will not be able to get your account back. For this reason you should pay attention to your email account and use a secure email password that is different from any other password you are using elsewhere. If you have a free email address, make sure to use it now and then because free email addresses are often removed by the mail providers if they are not accessed regularly. For further information on how to protect your account please see our security hints.
  2. Selecting a Password
Last but not least, you need to select a password. You should make sure your new password is secure. For details on how to create secure passwords please see our security hints. Passwords can be changed later on by clicking on the corresponding button on the account page. For further information please see the manual section on accounts.
To make sure you have entered the password correctly, you need to repeat it in the line below.
  3. If you create the account via the client, you must now read and accept our terms.

2.2 Creating a Character

In the next steps, you will create your first character. Before you can embark on your adventure you need a hero of your own! To create a character you must give it a name and select its gender as well as its game world. Note that each account can contain up to 25 active characters. All of these characters can exist on one game world, but it is also possible to create characters on different game worlds.

2.2.1 Choosing a Name
First off your character needs a name. You have great freedom in choosing your favourite name, but there are some limiting factors. For instance, your character's name cannot consist of more than 29 letters, and it must not contain numbers, special characters, certain words or combinations of letters.
Above all, however, the name must not violate the Tibia Rules. We recommend you select a name that fits well into the magical world of Tibia, because this way you can help us to create a nice fantasy atmosphere for all players. Keep in mind that you have to pay a fee if you want to rename your character later on, so you should really pick a name you like.
If you find your imagination lets you down, or if none of your proposals is accepted, our automatic name generator may be able to help you to find a decent name. All you need to do is to click on "Suggest Name". The name proposal will appear in the box now. You can repeatedly click on "Suggest Name" until you have found a name that you like.

2.2.2 Choosing Your Character's Sex
It is up to you to decide which sex your character should have. Of course, this will determine your character's outfit. Also, your character's gender will have an influence on certain situations in the game, but in general both sexes are equal in Tibia.
It is possible to change your character's sex later on for a small fee. For details please see the manual section on Character Sex Change.

2.2.3 Selecting the Game World
Although there is only one Tibia, the game unfolds on many parallel worlds that are identical in many ways. However, for all their similarity you should be aware that there are some notable differences between the various game worlds.
  • World Category (only when creating the account via the Tibia website)
This option allows you to select your world category. There are two categories to choose from:
    • Regular World: This is the default world category, where all game features work exactly as described in this manual and changes are only released after extensive testing. We recommend players should generally choose to play on regular game worlds, especially if they are new to the game or if they prefer to play in reliable, well-tested environments.
    • Experimental World: This category is highly special, as such experimental worlds are occasionally used by CipSoft as proving grounds for new features or for other testing purposes. They differ from regular worlds in several important aspects. For instance, players can only create a character on an experimental world if they already have at least one other character on the account. Experimental game worlds are locked, which means you can transfer there. However, if you want to leave an experimental game world, you can only transfer to other locked game worlds. Most important, experimental worlds are used for announced and unannounced tests or experiments. There is always a chance that these tests turn out to influence gameplay in an unforeseen and undesirable way. Because of this, CipSoft expressly reserves the right to reset these game worlds to former states! Finally, experimental game worlds are not protected by BattlEye.
Apart from these differences, experimental worlds are like any other regular game world, so players can and should play normally in all other aspects. Experimental worlds are recommended for players who are curious about future developments, or who wish to contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the game. These game worlds are also an option for players who experience problems on BattlEye protected game worlds.
  • World Location (only when creating the account via the Tibia website)
Tibia runs on servers that are based in different countries. Although you are free to play on any server you like, we recommend you choose a game server that is close to your geographical position to make sure you get the best playing conditions available. Thus, if you are living on the American continent or in Asia, you should select a server that is based in North America, while European players should choose a European server.
  • World Type (only when creating the account via the Tibia website)
You can select here on what type of game world you would like to play. There are different types of game worlds to choose from:
    • Optional PvP: Worlds that are marked as optional PvP (i.e. "optional Player versus Player") are worlds on which players can only attack others if they agree to it. So if you prefer to play peacefully, you should consider choosing a world such as Secura or Harmonia.
    • Open PvP: On game worlds marked as open PvP it is allowed to attack and even kill other characters, although excessive killing of other characters will lead to skull marks accompanied by tough sanctions to make sure the situation does not get out of hand.
A word on the game world Premia: This world is a Premium game world meaning only Premium players may play on this world. In all other respects Premia is just like any other world with open PvP combat.
    • Retro Open PvP: On game worlds marked as retro open PvP it is allowed to attack and even kill other characters, although excessive killing of other characters will lead to skull marks accompanied by tough sanctions to make sure the situation does not get out of hand. For more information, please have a look at the corresponding FAQ.
    • Hardcore PvP: On worlds marked as hardcore PvP combat between players is actually encouraged. Here, characters can only walk through each other in protection zones unless they are standing on special fields. If you prefer the thrill of attacking other characters, you should choose one of these worlds. For details on PvP combat please see the section on player killing.
    • Hardcore Retro PvP: On game worlds marked as hardcore retro PvP attacking and killing other characters is tolerated and encouraged. If you prefer the thrill of attacking other characters, you should choose one of these worlds. For details on hardcore retro PvP game worlds, please check the corresponding FAQ.
We suggest you consider the different game worlds carefully before you choose the world you want to play in. One thing you should keep in mind when selecting a game world: Power abuse and the oppression of other characters is generally tolerated and possible on open and hardcore PvP game worlds. So if in doubt, we recommend playing on an optional PvP game world.
  • World Name (only when creating the account via the Tibia website)
Depending on your location and type selection, a recommended game world will be displayed here. If you would like to play on a different game world, you can click on the link "change game world" to see all game worlds that fit the selected categories.
  • Recommended World (only when creating the account via the Tibia client)
A recommended game world will be displayed here. If you would like to play on a different game world, you can click on the button "Change World" to see all game worlds.
  • Play Tutorial (only when creating the account via the Tibia website)
Check this box if you want to play the tutorial. Players who already have a character on the main continent may skip the tutorial by leaving this box unchecked. These characters will start with level 2 at the stairs to Dawnport.

2.3 Reading and Accepting Terms

Below the Tibia Service Agreement, the Tibia Rules and the Tibia Privacy Policy are displayed. The Tibia Service Agreement is a list of conditions which determine the game service supplied by CipSoft. The Tibia Rules are a set of special rules that are designed to regulate the behaviour of players in the game. You should read them very carefully because all our players are expected to know the Tibia Rules well and to follow them at all times. The Tibia Privacy Policy explains in detail which information of all users is collected and for which purposes it can be processed and used. Please read those documents carefully.
Finally, if you consent to all 3 documents, please tick the corresponding boxes below. Please note that you can only play Tibia if you have agreed to all 3 documents. If you have agreed to all terms, click on "Submit" to continue.
Once you have chosen your password, submitted your email address, chosen your character's world, name and sex and accepted all terms, your account will be created. Congratulations! You are almost ready to start the game and to enter the world of Tibia! However, before you start out on your adventure we strongly recommend you take the time to read our security hints.
Also make sure that you confirm your account later. To do so click on the link in the email that has been sent to the address you have entered during the account creation. If you have not received our email, you can request it again on your account page. Also make sure to register your account.

2.4 Getting Started

You can play Tibia either via the Tibia client, a Mac client or a Linux client program. The process of starting the game actually differs depending on which option you choose. However, either way the actual amount of data stored locally on your computer is comparatively small, since most of the actual game is handled by central computers usually referred to as "game servers". When playing Tibia, the client continually connects to the game servers via the internet.

2.4.1 Download and Installation

a) Tibia Client (Windows)
In order to play, you must download the Tibia Launcher and install it on your system first. The link to the Tibia Launcher can be found on the download page. Before you download the Tibia Launcher, please make sure to read the Tibia Service Agreement carefully. If you agree to it, click on the corresponding button to continue. On the next page, click on the link "system requirements" to find out if your system is sufficient to run Tibia. Read the disclaimer carefully, and if you agree to it, click on the download link for the Windows client. You will be asked to choose a directory into which you would like to download the installation file. Select a directory and confirm. Please note that the downloaded file requires approximately 40 MB of free disk space on your hard disk.

Once the installation file has been downloaded the Tibia Launcher can be installed on your computer. Installing the Tibia Launcher is easy. Simply start the installation file. The setup wizard will lead you through the installation process. Once more you will be asked to read and to confirm our service agreement. Also, you will be asked which directory you would like to install the Tibia Launcher folder to, what name you would like the Tibia Launcher folder to have, and whether or not you would like to have the Tibia Launcher icon on the desktop. Once you have confirmed your selections the installation will be carried out. The complete folder will initially take about 350 MB of disk space. Note, however, that the client will require some more space in your personal documents and settings folder which can increase up to 100 MB once you have explored the full world map of Tibia.

Note: If too many players are online on the selected game world, you will have to wait a while before you can log in. The client will show your current position in the login queue and automatically try to log in your character after the displayed waiting period. Please keep in mind that the game server will block all login trials that are made before the waiting period is over.

b) Mac Client
The client link can be found on the download page. Before you download the client, please make sure to read the Tibia Service Agreement carefully. If you agree to it, click on the corresponding button to continue. On the next page, click on the download link for the macOS client to start the download. You will be asked to choose a directory into which you would like to download the installation file. Select a directory and confirm. Next unpack the "Tibia.app.tar.gz" with an unpacking software of your choice. To successfully start and later on update the launcher, it needs read and write access. Therefore, move the unpacked folder to your local "Applications" folder or any other location with read and write permission. Now you can start the Tibia launcher and start playing.

c) Linux Client
The client link can be found on the download page. Before you download the client, please make sure to read the Tibia Service Agreement carefully. If you agree to it, click on the corresponding button to continue. On the next page, click on the download link for the Linux client. You will be asked to choose a directory into which you would like to download the installation file. Select a directory and confirm. Please note that the downloaded file requires approximately 53 MB of free disk space on your hard disk.

After downloading the appropriate tarball for your system, you need to decompress the tarball in a desired target folder. To do so use the following command:

tar xfz tibia1000.tgz

A new folder named Tibia will be created, which contains the client and its supporting files. We recommend to do this in your home directory or a subdirectory of it, since the map files and your config file will also be created there. To start Tibia, you have to switch to the newly created Tibia folder. To do so, please start the binary called "Tibia". Please understand that the client will not be able to find all necessary files to run the game if you try to start the client from any other location. If you want to create a desktop launch icon, you should also adjust the launcher to incorporate the working path for the application. The complete folder will initially take about 325 MB of disk space. Note, however, that the client will require some more space in the ".tibia" folder which can increase up to more than 100 MB once you have explored the full world map of Tibia.

Once you have created your account as well as a character you are ready to play. To start Tibia, double-click on the desktop icon. You will now be taken to the title screen.

2.4.2 Starting the Game

Once you have started the Tibia Launcher, you will be taken directly to the title screen, provided you have the newest client version installed. If there is an update available, you will first be directed to a different screen where you are asked to download the newest client. To do so, click on the big orange button to install the latest update. Note that this button is blue if you need to download the Tibia client completely. As soon as the new client has been installed, the button will turn green and you get you to the title screen. There you will find various boxes:
  • Login Box
    • Login and Character List
Before you can start playing, you must enter your email address and password. If your account is connected to an authenticator, you will also be asked to enter a valid token. If the data you have entered is correct, a list will appear in which you will see the names of all your characters as well as the game worlds they live on. Select the character you would like to play with and click on "Ok". Please note that if too many players are online on the selected game world, you will have to wait a while before you can log in. The client will show your current position in the login queue and automatically try to log in your character after the displayed waiting period. Please keep in mind that the game server will block all login trials that are made before the waiting period is over.
If you are playing on a free account or your Premium Time is about to end in the next 14 days, you will also see on the character list the link "Get Premium". By clicking on "Get Premium" you will be forwarded to the corresponding section of your account management page if you are already logged in on the website. In case you are not logged in yet, you will be asked to enter your account data now. Once you are logged in, you can order Premium Time to be able to use Tibia's great Premium features.
    • Remember email
If you tick this box, the client will remember your email address for your next login.
Note: You should not use this option if you play on a computer which is also used by others.
    • Forgot password and/or email
In case you have lost your password, you can visit the Lost Account Interface by clicking on "Forgot password".
